In recent months, I have received many e-mails and responses from people who say that they experience fewer symptoms thanks to adjusting their diet. I often hear that it makes people feel more energetic and comfortable in their own skin, and in some cases, annoying symptoms that people had had for years have even disappeared completely. I also increasingly hear that nutrition has a great influence on characteristics of ADD and ADHD and that certain foods can even cause a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD in some cases.

This topic has interested me for a while now, so I wanted to experience it for myself. Below I describe how I changed my diet over the past few weeks and what it has given me in terms of general well-being and my ADD and HSP.

My breakfast

As you may know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So for me, this starts right away healthy, but of course also at least as tasty! :D

But first, I will briefly describe what my breakfast looked like before the adjustment. A few weeks ago, I still just ate 2 brown sandwiches in the morning with some toppings like cold cuts or sweets. I bought everything at the Albert Heijn supermarket. My experience, which I thought was quite normal then, was that I was soon hungry again and craved a snack. Sometimes this would be chips or Turkish pizza, other times a Mars or some crisps or just extra sandwiches. I actually always felt fluctuations throughout the day from energetic to tired, from mentally exhausted to sharp etc.

In the last few weeks, I have changed my breakfast to a bowl filled with oat flakes or sometimes I take a nut mix.

Oat flakes are very nutritious and are much easier to digest than bread and give off energy for longer. To this I put a fruit on top, such as a banana, an apple or a pear. Because I have been hearing a lot of bad things about cow's milk for years, I have stopped using it completely. It is said to cause allergies in many people. I therefore supplement it with almond milk. Finally, I add some superfoods. Usually some goji berries, maca powder, bee pollen, hemp seeds, chia seeds, cocoa powder or a combination of these. Just alternate it nicely. I order all these from superfood.nl but you can also buy them perfectly well at Ekoplaza, for example.

I assure you, this is a mega healthy and nutritious breakfast that will keep you full for a long time and is also very tasty. Here you can see a picture of my deliciously healthy breakfast that I prepare in 2 minutes and which leaves me feeling full and satisfied for hours. In the photo, the milk has not yet been added.

My snacks and snacks

My snacks and snacks these days are actually never sweets, crisps or junk food. I also don't drink soft drinks like cola anymore. I actually mostly just drink water and sometimes those vegetable/fruit juices. But living solely on water saves a lot of money, I can tell you! ;)

All that sugar in soft drinks and snacks gives you huge spikes in your sugar levels and then another downer. I myself usually also felt less clear in my head after eating (a lot of) sugar. Nowadays, I prefer to eat a fruit, a carrot, some nuts or, for example, some cherry tomatoes as a snack. If I do eat sweets, it is from an organic shop like ekoplaza and then, for example, syrup waffles with raw pure honey or lovechock.

Lovechock (pictured here) is a bar of pure raw unprocessed chocolate with superfood fruits mixed in. Unfortunately not cheap but immensely delicious and very healthy too! Just goes to show that snacking can also be healthy. But of course I still sin sometimes and eat some nice chips sometimes ;)

What I am most excited about and what has made me feel so much better are drinking green smoothies. I don't make these daily but try to do so as much as possible. Green smoothies I can really recommend! They give you lots of energy, are super healthy, but also really tasty and they don't take much effort to make. Below I tell you more about these green smoothies and why they are so important.

Green Smoothies, my personal favourite!

What has made a huge positive impact on my life in terms of my mental and physical health is drinking Green Smoothies. These are Smoothies to which you add fresh vegetables in addition to fruit, such as strawberry, pear, banana, mango, orange, grapes, melon etc. This can be spinach, endive or cucumber, for example. What I like about these smoothies is that you are not tied to a strict diet.

For me, Green Smoothies have become an (almost) daily routine in my life. I couldn't live without them anymore. The reason I can keep this up well is because I notice significant results among other things on energy and resistance levels. I usually feel significantly better and more comfortable in my skin when I drink green smoothies. Besides, I enjoy making them and they are tasty too. Also a tip perhaps to get your children to eat their fruit and vegetables ;) Another advantage is that you are more likely to give up expensive soft drinks, which saves you a lot of money to use for the smoothies.

Why green smoothies and why in ADD, ADHD, HSP?

Green smoothies are not only super tasty but a really good way to get all the important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for mega energy and resistance. You get much more of them than during normal eating. This is because you normally cook your food. This heating causes a lot of nutrients to be lost. Also nice to know is that, unlike ordinary juice, a smoothie still contains 100% of dietary fibre. This makes you feel full longer, promotes bowel movements and expels toxins from your body. In the first few days of drinking green smoothies, you may even experience a bit of side effects from detoxifying your body. Only then do you really realise what good it does for your body!

We ADD'ers, ADHD'ers and HSP'ers sometimes suffer from chronic stress for years because we always feel like we are tiptoeing around and have to deal with a lot of overstimulation and things that make us struggle more on a daily basis. Unfortunately, prolonged stress causes all your buffers in your body to burn up. Once burnt out, these buffers are not easily replenished and annoying, unexplained symptoms can result. Green smoothies then prove to be a very good supplement that give you a healthy and energetic boost and replenish your buffers. You just feel the strength returning to your body and mind. I have experienced that myself!

All you need for making Green Smoothies is a blender to blend the fruit and vegetables. In turn, blending also ensures that the nutrients are optimally absorbed by the intestines.

For me, as much organic food as possible

What I value highly is to buy my food from the organic shop as much as possible. Here you buy pure and honest food that is as close to nature as possible. Financially, this may be a bigger expense, but I find it more than worth it. On the other hand, you automatically get less cravings for snacks in between meals because you are full for longer. You save on that again. You can also stop drinking soft drinks. You won't spend that much more.

These days, you hear more and more often that all this 'junk' added to our food can cause annoying complaints in people. For instance, complaints such as fatigue, concentration problems, lack of rest and so on. Highly sensitive people, ADDs and ADHDs are particularly susceptible to this. Of course, I am no expert and one study contradicts another, but be aware of it.

Consider that the products from the organic shop are all pure and therefore unprocessed, unsprayed and nothing has been added. So no antibiotics in the meat, no e-numbers, no pesticides, no colourings, aromas and flavourings etc. etc. etc. and what I find at least as important is that the animals have had a better life. After all, I am a true animal lover and am sickened by the images I sometimes get to see how animals are treated. They are mostly treated badly and fattened up as quickly as possible! Just think of the plump chicken. A fat 2-week-old chick!

The result of nutrition on my ADD, HSP and general well-being

All in all, thanks to these dietary adjustments, I feel calmer, more energetic, clearer in my head, and less prone to overexcitement. I also notice that I have fewer uppers and downers during the day. As a result, I snack less in between snacks, which in turn saves money which you can spend on organic food which is usually more expensive.

So I feel considerably more stable getting through the day. Of course, my ADD has not gone away but it is all going a bit easier for me. In any case, external symptoms around it have clearly diminished. So I can recommend everyone to also look into this and take the tips on board. I can also really recommend starting with green smooties.

At the moment, I haven't changed my evening diet yet. This is something I will write about in a future blog. In doing so, I would very much like to highlight the paleo way of eating, also known as primal diet, start adding it to my daily diet. After all, I have heard many good reports about this.

Do you have any good tips or maybe you want to share your opinion or tell us about your changes in your diet and what it brings you?
