Indeed, experts in the field agree that these foods may well be the root cause in the increase in these diagnoses. I have been told this by several specialists, biochemists and AD(H)D nutritionists.

Many people with ADD, ADHD, HSP and autism report that certain dietary adjustments have changed their lives very positively. The changes in behaviour and reductions in symptoms are in some cases unprecedented. Below are the recommended dietary adjustments.

The nutrition tips for ADD, ADHD, HSP and autism

Recommended to avoid

Avoid casein (this is the animal protein found in dairy products)

Avoid gluten (this is found in cereal products, gluten-free bread does exist)

Avoid products with added E numbers whenever possible (E621, or MSG, is the worst! You find it a lot in processed food with flavour enhancers)

Avoid sweets like biscuits, sweets, energy drinks etc as much as possible. Instead, have 2 pieces of fruit a day. Tip! Try raw chocolate with at least 70% cocoa as a tasty craving snack. There are also 85% cocoa bars or even higher. Often delicious too with the addition of vanilla)

Movie - Girl cures autism by avoiding casein, gluten and MSG (E621)

Recommended to do eat

Everything that falls outside the list above (instead of grains with gluten, I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast and sometimes gluten-free bread from e.g. Schär) Both available at Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Picnic. Nice and easy ;)

Above all, eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Tip! Make green smoothies (read more about them below)

Eat oily fish at least once a week (promotes stimulus conduction in the brain by omega 3 and 6, among others. This contributes to better mood and concentration)

You can eat fine meat, preferably more white than red meat and organic. Besides the animals having had a better life with organic, it is also free of antibiotics and other junk you don't want in your food.

Potatoes and rice are fine (preferably sweet potato as they have slow carbs).

All nuts, seeds and kernels

Keep it simple! A good guideline is to just eat as close to nature as possible. So unprocessed food and as few packet/bagged products as possible. Then you'll usually be fine. Try to focus on meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, (sweet) potatoes, rice, nuts, seeds and pits and vary enough. Organic is always best.

Remember that it is equally important to drink enough water. This allows you to drain all the clutter in your body. Try to drink at least 2 - 2.5 litres of water a day. To hot days even more.

Why avoid these foods in ADD, ADHD, HSP and autism?

Actually, this way of eating amounts to eating according to the paleo diet (also called primal diet because you pretty much go back to the basics of what our ancestors ate). Now the Paleo diet is officially a bit stricter because you then also avoid oatmeal, potatoes and rice. Sweet potatoes are allowed though. I therefore eat as I call it myself Paleo plus ;) Basically just Paleo + oatmeal, sometimes gluten-free bread (not too often), (sweet) potatoes and rice. That makes it a lot easier and it's also totally fine.

Past and present

By the way, did you know that before the Second World War, everyone ate mostly paleo and organic? Funnily enough, there were also far fewer diseases of affluence back then, and nobody had heard of all those labels today. Unfortunately, nowadays it is much harder to stick to organic and healthy eating. Well, there were no temptations. Everyone lived in an organic environment and processed food and junk food, crisps, sweets, energy drinks and so on, simply did not exist.

Eating healthy and organic food, alongside all the temptations these days, takes quite a bit of discipline. Especially since you will go off quite a bit in the first few weeks and you will notice it. Still, I can really recommend giving it a try for a while. Further on, I'll show you that it doesn't have to be as difficult as you might think now and the results people get are often huge. Not only in terms of ADD, ADHD, HSP and ASD , but also just in general in terms of mental and physical well-being.

Exorphins (found in gluten, casein, spinach and soy)

The withdrawal symptoms you will experience are partly due to the exorphins you no longer take. These are opiates. These exorphins are morphine-like proteins in food and stimulate our reward system (endorphin system). They are found in gluten (cereal products), casein (dairy products), spinach and soya. In the long run, this can greatly deplete your endorphin system which makes the symptoms in ADD, ADHD, HSP and autism worse. In fact, new research shows that many contemporary diagnoses such as these, as well as various diseases of affluence such as depression, anxiety, as well as asthma and diabetes, arise purely from a hypersensitivity to these exorphins and a consequently unbalanced endorphin system.

By the way, the fact that it is better to avoid gluten has nothing to do with celiac disease. With celiac disease, you really are allergic to gluten which can cause severe symptoms immediately after consuming it. That is something completely different from what we are talking about here. For us, it is purely about the exorphins that occur in them. As mentioned earlier, these deplete the reward system in the brain. This can result in ADD, ADHD, autism, as well as high sensitivity-related symptoms. I could write pages full of this but that would make the article far too long.

Fast carbs

If you stick to the list of tips mentioned above, in addition to the exorphins, you will also get a lot less fast carbohydrates that cause your sugar levels to rise briefly. These are found in sweets, cakes, soft drinks but also bread. As a result, your body literally has to learn to deal with food all over again and balance itself. This will also cause withdrawal symptoms. If you get through the withdrawal period, the results can be enormous and I have heard this from many people.

It seems like a daunting task to start eating this new way. Fortunately, it's really not that bad. Below, I will show you how I approach it with my diet and you will find out that it really doesn't have to be as hard as you may think right now.

What am I doing myself in terms of nutrition?

Personally, I pay partial attention to it. I am pretty well on track if I say so myself. Although, of course, I do sin from time to time. Well, I'm still human and ADD, haha ;) My goal is to eventually eat what is good for me and that really doesn't have to be as difficult as you might think. I try to make it as easy as possible for myself and I am already noticing positive effects in terms of my energy, clarity and general well-being. I will tell you below what I eat throughout the day.

My breakfast

For breakfast, I usually eat an omelette or a green smoothie or oatmeal breakfast. I really recommend the green smoothie and will tell you more about it in a moment. I also often make a nut and oatmeal mix with almond milk (this is not dairy). I usually top this with a banana, some goji berries and some maca powder or cocoa powder. Hemp seeds, chia seeds, bee pollen and all kinds of other nuts, sat, seeds and vrichten also do very well in this and are hugely healthy. Some are so-called superfoods. Coconut rind on top is also delicious!

Superfoods are not a necessity

No, superfoods are really not a necessity. The advantage is just that it makes your breakfast a lot tastier and gives an extra healthy boost at the same time. They are just very expensive so not for everyone. Superfoods do not turn you into a superman like retailers might want you to believe. There are simply certain fruits and seeds that, on average, contain far more essential nutrients than other foods. These have been given the term 'superfood'. Take that with a grain of salt and see it only as an extra healthy addition, because healthy they certainly are! Is it going to solve every ailment? No, not that of course. You can just experiment with it yourself and of course you don't have to add everything. Just vary it a bit. If you don't add it at all, that's fine too!

Lunch and in-between snacks

I never really do lunch. If I have the time, I make an omelette with bacon, mushrooms, peppers, tuna etc, for example. Of course, you can make up all kinds of things. If you have a day off, you can also bake a piece of meat with some vegetables for lunch. There are so many delicious healthy foods out there! :D An avocado is also delicious between meals and filling! You can also eat gluten/lactose-free bread with, for example, cold cuts or jam, apple syrup. I do buy all that at the organic shop. In my case the Ekoplaza. Often you then just eat pure apple or pure jam made of berries without all kinds of sugar additives and the like.

During the day, I also alternate between eating carrots, tomatoes, fruit, nuts, sultanas, dates, etc. Another thing I really love is lovechock. Not cheap unfortunately but super tasty and super healthy too! Really worth trying and a great ADHD snack!

Green smoothies are the bomb!

I just said it - what I'm most excited about is making green smoothies. They completely fulfil the list of nutritional tips and are great to drink as a snack, but also as a full breakfast or lunch meal.

Green smoothies improve your immunity, you feel better, brighter and also get more energy and you can handle stress much better. These are actually just a few of the benefits. For instance, many people report getting rid of allergies and getting healthier skin. With green smoothies, you simply get all the important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants you desperately need into your body in a tasty, quick and simple way.

Dinner

For dinner, I usually try to stick to some meat or fish. Not too often red meat. White meat is a lot better. With this I then eat vegetables. But I am no superman and still sin, haha. Yes, I too sometimes eat a pizza or other pasta (contains gluten and thus exorphins). (Update September 2015, I have now been eating no gluten and lactose at all for 3 months and it's going great). So no more pizza and pasta for me either. A potato chip, by the way, is fine. You can eat this just fine 2 or 3 times a week provided you want to lose weight, of course. Well, then you might want to leave it out. I do eat my own tons of mayonnaise because it does not contain lactose.

Everything I describe above that I eat during the day also meets the aforementioned list. So a great choice that doesn't take me much time. And really, don't think you can't eat well anymore. I eat deliciously and don't miss anything at all anymore. The addictions to sweets and other treats go away naturally and then you really don't want it anymore ;)

I also try to buy my food as much as possible from organic supermarkets like Ekoplaza, for example. These products are pure and largely unprocessed, unsprayed and have fewer or no additives such as antibiotics in the meat, e-numbers, pesticides, colourings, etc. What I also find at least as important is that with organic products, the animals have had a better life. Another nice bonus is that the environment is less affected!

The power of green smoothies

I said it before, green smoothies are the bomb! Really! They have already made a huge positive impact on my life. But what are they?

Green smoothies are smoothies where you mix fresh vegetables in addition to fruit, such as strawberry, pear, banana, mango, orange, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, melon and so on. This could be kale, endive, lettuce or cucumber, for example.

What I like about these green smoothies is that you are not tied to a strict diet. You can experiment and mix whatever you like. It is also nice to add coconut fat or nuts, for example. Or add some sultanas, dates or honey as an extra. It's all possible and super tasty.

Why are green smoothies so healthy...?

Drinking Green Smoothies is not only very tasty but it is also just the ideal way to quickly and easily all important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants inside for mega energy, resistance and to ward off stress. In fact, you get much more of them than during normal eating. One reason for this is that you now eat the vegetables raw. Normally, you boil or bake your vegetables. This heating causes a lot of nutrients to be lost. Also nice to know is that, unlike regular juice, a smoothie still contains 100% of dietary fibre. This makes you feel full longer, promotes bowel movement and expels toxins from your body.

All you need to make Green Smoothies is a blender to blend the fruit and vegetables. In turn, blending also ensures that the nutrients are optimally absorbed by the intestines.

Because these smoothies are so healthy, they have a huge positive impact on our mental and physical well-being. It can help with all kinds of complaints. Many of us have complaints like fatigue, restlessness, not feeling comfortable and all those kinds of strange and sometimes inexplicable complaints. These are often the result of stress. We ADDs, ADHDs and HSPs sometimes suffer years of chronic stress because we always feel like we are on our toes and have to deal with a lot of overstimulation on a daily basis. Unfortunately, prolonged stress causes all your buffers in your body to burn up. Once burnt out, these buffers are not easily replenished and annoying, unexplained symptoms can result.

Green Smoothies prove to be an ideal supplement that give you a healthy and energetic boost. I personally notice that I suffer less from symptoms associated with my ADD and HSP such as unclearness, languidness, overstimulation etc. Green smoothies give me an overall feeling of better well-being, calmness, more energy and a clear mind. I also notice that my skin looks better and I suffer less from allergies.

Green smoothie recipe...

Below, I give you a recipe of a simple green smoothie that you can quickly make yourself.

The Green Smoothie salad with apple and cinnamon

Ingredients

Handful of fresh romaine lettuce

1 glass of water

1 to 2 apples (pear is also nice)

1 banana

One full teaspoon of honey

Half a tablespoon of cinnamon

For all ingredients, organic fruit and vegetables are better but not essential. If you don't use an organic apple, do remove the skin. Otherwise, you can just leave the skin on. Again, this contains a lot of good nutrients!

With smoothies, you can actually experiment endlessly yourself. So don't feel tied to this recipe and try other fruits and vegetables. You can also add nuts or berries, for example. A spoonful of coconut oil is also very healthy. If you want it sweeter, just add some honey, dates or sultanas. No limits, just try it out! :D

Preparation:

No fuss, just put everything in the blender and blend ;) Especially experiment with other fruits and vegetables.

Start your day with a green smoothie!

I can really recommend you to start making green smoothies yourself. You really don't have to do this every day right away. The best thing is of course to just make a green smoothie every day but you don't have to. Make 2 or 3 per week and you will already notice positive effects on your mental and physical health. They are delicious and you prepare them very quickly so there is really no reason not to do it.

On to better health and a more stable life!

You can probably try the aforementioned nutrition tips for yourself for a while to experience what it does to you. It won't do you any favours. It helps me and in my surroundings I have heard very good results from people who stick to them. I also received positive feedback about this in comments via e-mail and Facebook.

It certainly doesn't appear to be only for ADD, ADHD, high sensitivity and autism work well. Also for various diseases of affluence today such as asthma, diabetes, anxiety and depression. We are all human and for the past 50 years or so we have all been eating the same junk that our bodies are not designed to withstand, not to mention all the toxic substances we ingest. No human being is the same and in everyone it expresses itself in a different way.

A good way to get your fruits and vegetables to boost your energy and (stress) resistance are green smoothies. For me, green smoothies have become an (almost) daily routine in my life. I couldn't live without them anymore. The reason I can keep this up well is because I notice significant results on energy and resistance levels. You notice a difference after just a few days. In the first few days you may even experience nice side effects from detoxifying your body. This can be accompanied by restlessness, gastrointestinal complaints, headaches, etc. Only then do you really realise what good it does for your body. The worse the side effects, the more junk you clean up!

Besides, I also just like making green smoothies and they are super tasty. So, also a good tip maybe to get your kids into fruits and vegetables ;)

Diet for ADD, ADHD and autism

Paleo 'primal diet'

Paleo, back to basic nutrition

What really attracts me and what I mentioned above is the "Paleo" way of eating. This is a kind of "primal diet" which brings you back to basic nutrition as a human being. That which is really meant for us. I can recommend that you read up a bit more on the Paleo way of eating. This is a way of eating that is already very popular in America and is also gaining popularity in the Netherlands. The Paleo diet goes completely back to basic nutrition. This is why it is also called the "primal diet". This is the diet originally intended for humans.

Indeed, it turns out that our contemporary diet plays a major role in many diseases and disorders. Here you can think of Obesity, Diabetes, chronic fatigue, but certainly not entirely unimportant for us to know, also labels like ADD, ADHD and Autism. Such a primal diet as Paleo can have a huge positive impact on these. It may even make many of your symptoms you are experiencing disappear.

I have written a whole page about the Paleo diet in which I give you more clarity. Click on the link below to read more about this popular primal diet:

> The paleo diet, Eating like a primeval man!

RED diet

There are several diets available for labels like ADD and ADHD that should reduce or even eliminate symptoms altogether. I am not familiar with this myself but hear from several people that it has helped them. In some it works in others it doesn't.

This diet involves getting very few different foods for a prolonged period of time. As it were, you only get the necessary basic foods. In time, you may then see improvement and experience fewer symptoms. From then on, you will be allowed to add a new food product to your diet every few weeks.
